Elms Holds On For 3-1 Triumph Over Soccer

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 21, 2010) – Junior forward Jennifer Killion registered a pair of goals to push the Elms College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Mount Holyoke College this evening at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. It was the Blazers' third victory in a row.

Jacquelyn Archibald

Elms grabbed a 1-0 advantage at the 22:04 mark, when Killion received a short feed from first year midfielder Christina Goodchild, took two steps into the box and fired a shot past first year goalkeeper Emily Shank to the left side.

Mount Holyoke nearly tied things up in the waning minutes of the first half, but consecutive shots by junior midfielder Kelsey Graaskamp found the right post.

The Blazers took advantage of a corner kick opportunity to extend their cushion to 2-0 just over a minute into the second stanza. First year midfielder Ashley Venancio was credited with the assist on the play after her injection deflected off a Mount Holyoke defender to Goodchild, who left footed a shot out of the air past Shank from the top of the circle.

Mount Holyoke got on the board in the 68th minute, when junior midfielder Mary Cooke notched her first goal of the year. Senior forward Jacquelyn Archibald got the play started with a shot off the left post that made its way back toward the middle of the box. Cooke scooped up the loose ball and deposited it into the empty net.

Elms then scored off another corner kick set less than two minutes later to put things away. This time, it was Killion, who collected a pass from first year defender Allyson Witaszek and beat Shank from point blank range.

The Lyons fell despite a 23-12 in the shot column. Elms finished with a 5-4 edge in corner kick chances.

Junior goalkeeper Kelly Callahan got the start between the pipes for the Blazers. She made one save before leaving with an injury late in the first frame. First year Hayley Zisk stopped six shots in relief.

At the other end, Shank turned away six attempts in her first career start for the hosts.

Both squads will resume their conference slates on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (1-12-1, 1-5-1 NEWMAC) will round out the home portion of its schedule versus New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference foe Clark University at 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Elms (5-9-0, 3-2-0 NECC) will entertain New England Collegiate Conference opponent Bay Path College at 7:00 p.m.
