First Half Flurry Boosts WPI Past Mount Holyoke, 4-0

WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 19, 2010) – First year forward Megan Forti notched a natural hat trick to lift the WPI women's soccer team to 4-0 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this evening at Alumni Field.

Forti netted all three of her goals in a span of less than seven minutes late in the first half.

Her rally started in the 27th minute, when she took a pass from classmate Natalie McMillan on the left side and flicked a shot over the head of senior goalkeeper Elaine Harvey.

Forti's next two tallies were separated by only 43 seconds. The first came at the 33:49 mark, when she stole the ball in the left corner, drove in and beat Harvey short side. The forward then buried a cross from senior Kristen Garza to put the Engineers in front 3-0 at the 34:32 mark.

Garza closed out the scoring in the 87th mark using an assist from junior midfielder Suzanne Najem.

WPI (5-9-1, 3-4-1 NEWMAC) finished with a slight 15-11 edge in the shot column. First year goalkeeper Maddie Willer recorded five stops en route to posting her second shutout of the season. At the other end, Harvey made six saves.

Sophomore midfielder Mallory Phaneuf paced the Lyons with three shots. Meanwhile, junior forward Margaret Hanmer had a pair.

Mount Holyoke (1-11-1, 1-5-1 NEWMAC) will kick off a two match homestand on Thursday, when it hosts non-conference foe Elms College at 7:00 p.m.
