Soccer Edges Coast Guard For First Victory, 2-1

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 5, 2010) – Led by forwards Jacquelyn Archibald and Margaret Hanmer, the Mount Holyoke College women's soccer team picked up a thrilling 2-1 triumph over the Coast Guard Academy this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. With their first victory of the 2010 campaign, the Lyons improved to 1-2-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

Both sides went scoreless until the 50th minute, when Archibald took a long feed from sophomore midfielder Veronica Farmer, broke in alone and beat Coast Guard junior goalkeeper Mary Mills short side.

Hanmer then found the net for what proved to be the winner at the 69:21 mark. After collecting a loose ball in the middle of the box, she fired a shot past Mills into the lower left hand corner. Sophomore midfielder Mallory Phaneuf was credited with the assist on the play.

Refusing to go away, Coast Guard made a furious comeback attempt down the stretch. The Bears sliced the deficit to 2-1 in the 84th minute, when junior Angela Ingram scored off a short pass from classmate Shannah Shelton in the box.

From there, both teams went scoreless.

Coast Guard outshot Mount Holyoke 28-19 and finished with a 5-1 edge in penalty corner chances. The Lyons received a brilliant effort between the pipes from senior Elaine Harvey, who came up with a season high 13 saves. At the other end, Mills turned aside four shots for the Bears.

Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules in front of their home crowds on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (1-7-1, 1-2-1 NEWMAC) will host Babson College at 1:00 p.m., while Coast Guard (5-5-0, 1-3-0 NEWMAC) will entertain Wellesley College at noon.
