Swimming & Diving Remains 5th After Day 2 of NEWMAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Feb. 16, 2013) - Records continued to fall for the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team on day two of the NEWMAC Championships, hosted by MIT. In total, seven school records, while a NEWMAC open and meet record was shattered by first year Cathleen Pruden. The Lyons continued to hold onto fifth place among the 10-team field.

Pruden (pictured right) continued to excel at this year's meet, claiming her first NEWMAC crown with a victory in the 400-Individual Medley. With her time of 4:28.92, she not only reset her own school record (4:30.82), but also eclipsed the conference open and meet record in the event while also achieving her third NCAA 'B' Cut of the season.

Additionally, Pruden helped the 800-freestyle relay team to a school record mark as the foursome posted a mark of 7:57.34 to finish sixth overall, shattering the previous time of 8:08.83. Other members of the relay included senior Lindsey Kanno, first year Erica Carvell and sophomore Maya Lazarovich.

Kanno also had a record-setting day as she posted a school record time of 1:57.67 to finish 11th overall in the 200-freestyle. Her mark eclipsed the record set earlier this season by Pruden (1:58.19).

Lazarovich went on to finish 10th in the 100-breaststroke, posting a time of 1:08.17. Earlier in the day during the preliminaries, she posted a time of 1:08.14, which was a new school record, surpassing the mark set by Lindsay Schonborn '10 (1:09.02) set in 2010.

First year Bethany Aban had an outstanding effort in the 100-butterfly, finishing fifth overall with a time of 58.26, which eclipsed the previous record of 59.11. Additionally, she also posted a new mark in the 50-fly with a time of 26.48.

Rounding out the excellent performances was the 200-medley relay team of junior Lauren Williams, Lazarovich, Aban and senior captain Nora Cunningham. The foursome posted a time of 1:50.41 to finish fifth overall, which shattered the previous record of 1:54.44.

Action at the 2013 NEWMAC Championships concludes on Sunday with the preliminaries beginning at 10am. Finals will take place at 6pm.
