Led by 15th-year head coach Dave Allen, the Mount Holyoke swimming & diving team had a record-setting year in 2012-13. The Lyons, who posted a 7-3 dual meet record, claimed victory over Westfield State University, Trinity College, Western Connecticut State, St. Joseph University, Clark University, Simmons College and Smith College.
MHC also took home second-place honors at the Seven Sisters Championship, guided by the outstanding efforts of first year Cathleen Pruden and sophomore Maya Lazarovich. Teaming up with first year Bethany Aban and senior captain Nora Cunningham, the duo helped capture the 200-freestyle relay title. Lazarovich went on to win the 200-breaststroke in a championship record time of 2:29.40, while Pruden made history of her own.
Posting a time of 4:30.82, Pruden shattered the 400-Individual Medley record for both Seven Sisters and Mount Holyoke, while also winning the grueling 1650-freestyle in a time of 18:00.19 – another Seven Sisters record. For their efforts, Aban, Cunningham, Lazarovich and Pruden were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Led by Pruden, Mount Holyoke had an amazing turnaround at the NEWMAC Championships, going from 10th to fifth in one season. Overall, 15 school records fell, including eight set by Pruden, who won the 1650-free and the 400-IM. Her time of 17:30.29 shattered the MHC record, while the 4:28.92 mark in the 400-IM was not only a school record, but also a NEWMAC Meet and Open record.
At meet's end, Pruden was named the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year – a first for any Mount Holyoke swimmer. In addition to earning Swimmer of the Week honors three times throughout the season, Pruden figured in on 32 wins. She also etched her name onto 11 school records – seven of which were individual efforts.
The Lyons also saw excellence in the classroom as Cunningham, senior Victoria Gavin and sophomore Rebecca Rogers and Sophie Spector were all named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team. Cunningham and Gavin were also chosen as Seven Sisters Scholar Athletes.
