Swimming & Diving Downs Simmons, 160-97

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 12, 2013) – Led by victories in 13 of 16 events, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team cruised to a 160-97 victory over Simmons College on Saturday afternoon at the MHC Natatorium. The Lyons improved to 6-2 on the season with the win, while the Sharks slip to 4-4 overall.

MHC saw dominant efforts across the board as seven different student-athletes captured victory, including four with multiple wins. Leading the way were first years Bethany Aban (Poulsbo, Wash./North Kitsap) and Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C./Ravencroft School), who each had three victories.

Aban won the 50-yard backstroke (30.08) and the 50-yard butterfly (27.60), while Pruden touched the wall first in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.62) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.44). Both also helped the 200-medley relay team claim victory in a time of 1:57.79. Other members of the relay included senior Caitlin Lewis (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) and senior captain Nora Cunningham (Bronx, N.Y./Stuyvesant).

Sophomore Maya Lazarovich (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) won the 100-breast (1:11.23) and the 200-free (2:04.87), while senior Lindsey Kanno (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) was victorious in the 100-back (1:07.01) and the 500-free (5:34.63).

Sophomore Rui Nozaki (Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho) claimed victory in the 1000-free with a time of 11:34.83, while first year Erica Carvell (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) won the 100-fly in a time of 1:04.42.

In the diving events, sophomore Catrina Bellucci-DiLizia (Springfield, Mass./Home schooled) dominated for the second straight day, winning the 1-meter with a score of 183.40 points and the 3-meter with 176.30 points.

Mount Holyoke returns to the pool next Saturday and Sunday when it competes at the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Wellesley College. Action begins at 10am both days. Simmons is back in action on Wednesday in a 6pm meet at UMass-Dartmouth.
