Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Feb. 19, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team closed out its season with a tenth place showing at the 2012 NEWMAC Championships this weekend.  With sophomore Lauren Williams leading the way, the Lyons shattered nine school records in seven events and finished with 143 points.

Host MIT came out on top in 14 of the 20 events to secure its second straight title. Over the course of the weekend, the Engineers used their overall team depth to accumulate 960 points.

Springfield College grabbed second place with 821.5 points, while Wellesley College finished third with 430 points. The remainder of the field included the Coast Guard Academy (353.5), Wheaton College (335.5), Clark University (274.5), Babson College (183), Smith College (159), WPI (151) and Mount Holyoke (143)..

Williams figured in on five program records to set the tone for the Lyons.

Two of those came in the 200-yard medley relay, where she teamed up with first year Maya Lazarovich, sophomore Joselyn Auxer and senior Lydia Bowers to post an eighth place time of 1:54.44. She completed the lead leg of the race in 28.72 to set a new 50-yard backstroke mark.

The sophomore's ninth place time of 1:00.97 in the 100-yard backstroke was good for tops in program history. She had previously broken the record during her preliminary heat of the event earlier in the day on Saturday.

Williams also set a new record in the 800-yard freestyle relay along with Lazarovich, Bowers and first year Rachel Boynton. The quartet touched the wall in 8:08.83 to secure eighth place.

Bowers added her name to the record books with a 12th place time of 1:59.39 in the 200-yard freestyle. Like Williams, she had previously set the record with her performance in the preliminaries.

Meanwhile, Lazarovich established a new 50-yard breaststroke record with her first split time of 32.26 in the preliminaries of the 100-yard breaststroke. She went on to take 10th place in the event with her time of 1:09.55 in the finals.

The rookie closed out her weekend with another record performance in the final session tonight. This time, she completed the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:29.64 to earn 10th place.

Today's other highlights included a sixth place performance by Lazarovich, Boynton, senior Sarah Rooney and sophomore Allison Burhoe in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:48.53). Boynton also collected 12th place in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:10.89).

Mount Holyoke rounded out its 2011-12 campaign with a dual meet record of 6-3.
