Lazarovich Takes Home NEWMAC Swimmer of the Week Honors

Maya Lazarovich

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 16, 2012) – Mount Holyoke first year Maya Lazarovich was named NEWMAC Swimmer of the Week after a pair of stellar performances over the weekend. In addition to piling up six individual victories, she also figured in on a relay win.

The rookie set the tone for the Lyons in their tri-meet at Clark University on Friday. After picking up wins in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.91) and 200-yard butterfly (2:17.10), she shattered the program record in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her time of 2:29.91 was nearly three seconds better than the previous record set by Cynthia Nagle in 1999. As a team, the Lyons came up with a 126-110 triumph over Wheaton College. They were edged 124-119 by Clark.

Lazarovich was at it again in Mount Holyoke's 154-137 triumph over Simmons College on Saturday. After teaming up with sophomore Lauren Williams, senior Lydia Bowers and sophomore Joselyn Auxer to post the winning time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:59.57), she picked up individual victories in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.23), 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.22) and 100-yard individual medley (1:06.02 – pool record).

Just over three months into her career at Mount Holyoke, Lazarovich has already claimed top honors 20 times. She has been most impressive in the breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley events.

The Lyons (5-2) are slated to take part in the Seven Sisters Championship at Smith College next weekend. The annual competition will begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
