Swimming and Diving Overwhelms Smith in Regular Season Finale

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Feb. 4, 2012) – Led by senior Lydia Bowers and first year Maya Lazarovich, the Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team cruised to a 163-135 victory over longtime rival Smith College this afternoon. The Lyons took home top honors in 11 of the 16 events to secure their second straight victory over the Pioneers.

After touching the wall first in the 50-yard (25.88), 100-yard (55.64) and 200-yard (2:00.69) freestyle races, Bowers joined forces with classmate Sarah Rooney, sophomore Allison Burhoe and first year Rachel Boynton to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:52.40).

Lazarovich also figured in on four first place finishes. After teaming up with Rooney, sophomore Lauren Williams and sophomore Joselyn Auxer to post the winning time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.92), the rookie claimed victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.36), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.47) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.34).

Williams came out on top in both the 100-yard (1:02.88) and 200-yard (2:17.38) backstroke races. Meanwhile, Boynton prevailed in the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.39).

The Lyons rounded out their regular season with a dual meet record of 6-3. They are slated to compete in the NEWMAC Championships at MIT from Friday, February 17 - Sunday, February 19.
