Wellesley Sinks Swimming and Diving

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Jan. 29, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's swimming and diving team suffered a 168-127 setback at Wellesley College this afternoon. With the win, the Blue improved to 5-2 in dual meets this season. Mount Holyoke fell to 4-3.

paced the Lyons with one first place finish and three second place results. The sophomore took home top honors in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.79) and second place in the 50-yard butterfly (28.59). After grabbing second place in the 200-yard medley (1:56.57) relay along with first year Sin Seanne Ng, first year Lauren Williams and junior Lydia Bowers, she repeated feat in the 200-yard freestyle relay with sophomore Nora Cunningham, sophomore Lindsey Kanno and first year Allison Burhoe.

Mount Holyoke also received a boost from Williams, who clocked the top time in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.99) and secured second place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.34).

The Lyons's remaining wins came from Ng and classmate Leah Townsend. Ng claimed first place in the 50-yard backstroke (30.17), while Townsend won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:45.23).

Junior Victoria Gavin finished just behind Townsend in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:56.36). Meanwhile, senior Miki Yoshida (100-yard butterfly – 1:07.26), Kanno (100-yard breaststroke – 1:14.50) and Burhoe (500-yard freestyle – 5:40.08) each chipped in with second place results.

Wellesley recorded first place finishes in 12 of the 16 events.

The Blue were led Carolyn Jackson, who figured in on four wins. In addition to contributing to a pair of relay victories, she claimed top honors in the 50-yard freestyle (26.21) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.14). The sophomore opened the day with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.00) along with  first year Gabriela Kovacikova, first year Maria Amirkhanashvili and senior Dana Dutton. She then closed things out with a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.19) with Dutton, Amirkhanashvili and first year Anne Hamilton.

Dutton also added a victory in the 100-yard freestyle (57.29). Meanwhile, first year Hayley Goydan won both the diving events with scores of 429.68 on the one-meter and 232.19 on the three-meter.

Mount Holyoke (4-3) will round out its home slate against Smith College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Lyons will then host the NEWMAC Championships from February 18-20.
