Swimming and Diving Team Overpowers Simmons

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 15, 2011) – Led by sophomore Madeline Magee and first years Lauren Williams and Sin Seanne Ng, the Mount Holyoke College women's swimming and diving team cruised to a 175-119 triumph over Simmons College this afternoon and the Mount Holyoke Natatorium. A total of 10 Lyons figured in on wins for the hosts, who touched the wall first in 13 of the 16 events.

In addition to grabbing first place in the 100-yard freestyle (58.95), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.80) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.58), Magee also secured first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.31) along with Williams, sophomore Nora Cunningham and junior Lydia Bowers.

Sin Seanne Ng Williams collected individual victories in the 50-yard freestyle (26.45) and the 50-yard butterfly (28.93). Meanwhile, Ng posted top times in the 50 (30.03) and 100-yard (1:06.58) backstroke events after joining forces with Bowers, sophomore Lindsey Kanno and first year Joselyn Auxer to win the 200-yard medley relay (2:01.10).

Kanno also claimed victory in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.42).

Mount Holyoke's remaining wins came from first year Leah Townsend (1,000-yard freestyle, 12:03.04), senior Miki Yoshida (100-yard individual medley, 1:08.47) and first year Allison Burhoe (200-yard freestyle, 2:08.42).

Simmons was paced by senior Amanda Dirksmeier, who swept the diving events with scores of 210.45 off the one-meter board and 221.70 off the three-meter board. Classmate Virginia Bette added a win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.93).

Mount Holyoke (4-1) will return to action on Wednesday, when it visits Trinity College at 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Simmons (0-5) will resume its schedule at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
