Williams and Magee Help Swimming and Diving to Tri-Meet Split

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Jan. 14, 2011) – Following a 40 day hiatus, the Mount Holyoke College women's swimming and diving team returned to action with a tri-meet against Clark University and Wheaton College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Natatorium. Wheaton swept the meet, downing the Lyons 162-130 and the Cougars 153-142. Mount Holyoke notched a 168-130 triumph over Clark in the third matchup.

The Lyons totaled four first place finishes on the day. They were paced by first year Lauren Williams, who touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.50), the 50-yard freestyle (26.05) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:57.62).

Sophomore Madeline Magee also enjoyed an outstanding day for Mount Holyoke. In the process of winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.14), she established a new 50-yard breaststroke school record with her first split time of 32.48. Earlier in the day, she joined forces with Williams first year Sin Seanne Ng and junior Lydia Bowers to grab second place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.52).

Mount Holyoke also secured second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:56.63). The team consisted of sophomore Nora Cunningham, junior Sarah Rooney, senior Michelle Kroll and sophomore Lindsey Kanno.

Bowers (200-yard freestyle, 2:05.57), Cunningham (50-yard freestyle, 26.70) and first year Allison Burhoe (1,000-yard freestyle, 11:48.71) also chipped in with second place results.

With Adrianne Madden leading the way, Wheaton earned first place finishes in six of the 16 events. After teaming with sophomore Dana Auger, junior Sarah Miller and junior Taryn Brosnan to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.67),  she took top honors in both the 100-yard freestyle (55.65) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.49) events.

Miller went on to grab top honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:54.85) along with sophomore Elle Van Cott, senior Stephany Perkins and senior Alisha Wilson. Meanwhile, senior Nicole Zais added individual wins in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.72) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.52).

Leading the way for Clark were sophomore Mollie Kleyboecker and junior Eileen Garcia. Kleyboecker clocked top times in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:23.43) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.32). Meanwhile, Garcia swept the diving events with scores of 280.96 on the one-meter and 284.77 on the three-meter.

The Cougars remaining wins came from sophomore Emily Newton and senior Elizabeth Rosen. Newton came out on top in the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.13), while Rosen prevailed in the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.46).

Today's meet also featured a men's contest between Wheaton and Clark. Using a balanced attack, Wheaton won nine events en route to a 175-118 victory.

Senior Zach Fichman-Klein, first year Emerson Jenkins and first year Charlie Maier claimed two victories apiece to set the tone for the Lyons. Fichman-Klein's wins came in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.90) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.08). Meanwhile, Jenkins figured in on his team's triumph in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.54) and touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.93).

Clark was paced by juniors Ryan Garr and Lamar Duffy, who figured in on four of his team's seven victories. Garr claimed top honors in the 100-yard backstroke (54.55), the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.07) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.82), while Duffy tapped in first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.92) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.96). The duo also secured top honors in the 200-yard medley relay squad (1:42.48).

Mount Holyoke (3-1) will return to action tomorrow, when it hosts Simmons College at 1:00 p.m. Both Wheaton squads (women – 5-3, men 1-6) will also resume their schedules tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., when they face off against Connecticut College and Trinity College at Trinity. Clark's men (1-3) and women (3-3) will be off until next weekend, when they compete in the Worcester City Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday and run through Saturday.
