Soccer Defeated at Smith in NEWMAC Play

Northampton, Mass. - October 20, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to host Smith College, 6-0, at Elmore Field on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lyons fall to 2-9 on the year and 0-7 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, while the Pioneers improve to 5-5-4 overall adn 2-3-2 against league foes. 

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Breen (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) made 12 saves while Smith deployed the tandem of Naomi Falkenberg and Alexandra Osuna who combined for a clean sheet.

Smith had the first chances of the game as the Pioneers produced three shots in a span of 6:38, two of which were on target, but Breen defused the attack to keep the game scoreless. Mount Holyoke College got it's first shot on goal in the 20th minute as first-year forward Hannah Keochakian (Amherst, Mass.) put one on target but Falkenberg came up with the save.

Smith scored its first of the contest with 13:10 to play in the first half before extending their lead to a pair with 1:00 remaining. Just 15:19 into the second half, Smith pushed their lead to three on a goal from Natalie Dionne before the hosts scored two more in the final 20 minutes to escape with the victory.

Up next, the Lyons return to the MHC Soccer Field on Saturday, October 23 and will play host to league-foe WPI. Kick off is set for 12 p.m.
