Clark Blanks Soccer, 2-0, in NEWMAC Play

South Hadley, Mass. - October 13, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Wednesday evening at the MHC Soccer Field.

With the loss, the Lyons drop to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the NEWMAC, while the Cougars improve to 8-4 on the year and 4-1 in league play. In goal for the Lyons was sophomore Shannon Breen (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), who made 10 saves, while their counterpart, Anabella White, made two saves to seal the clean sheet for the Cougars.

The visitors owned a 39-2 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, including 25 shots in the second half. Clark was also granted 10 corner kicks in the win.

Clark opened the game putting plenty of pressure on the Mount Holyoke College net, as the Cougars collected three shots and a pair of corner kicks in the first 4:20. With just under 10 minutes to play in the half, Mount Holyoke College got their first scoring chance as Hannah Keochakian (Amherst, Mass.) beat her defender to the right and put a chance on cage, but White came up with the save to keep the Lyons at zero.

Clark would finally break through with 4:15 to play in the first half as Jamie Stern collected the ball at the midfield before making a great run to the middle of the field and blasting a shot past Breen into the lower-right corner of the net, granting the Cougars a 1-0 lead right before the break.

The Cougars continued to press the Lyons' back line in the second half and finally got an insurance marker in the 73rd minute when Emma Tziachris sent a long pass down the right flank which was controlled by Siobhan Lounsbury, who quickly beat Breen with a shot to the lower right-hand corner of the net to make it 2-0 with 17:11 to play.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return to the MHC Soccer Field on Saturday, October 16 as the Lyons welcome Babson in another NEWMAC battle beginning at 12 p.m.
