South Hadley, Mass. - October 25, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to nationally-ranked Wesleyan University, 5-0, at the MHC Soccer Field on Monday evening.
With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-11 on the year while the Cardinals, which were No. 17 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III National Rankings, improve to 12-1 overall. Wesleyan held a 40-2 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, and was awarded eight corner kicks compared to just one for the Lyons.
In net, Shannon Breen (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) made eight stops for Mount Holyoke while for Wesleyan, the trio of Erin Dailey, Juliette Vemmer and Courtney Litts pieced together a 90-minute clean sheet.
Wesleyan got on the board just 4:34 into the contest when Andi Wiley sent in a short cross to Gianna Argento who struck one from the top of the box over the hands of Breen and into the back of the net to make it 1-0, Cardinals. The visitors would add their second of the contest just 29 seconds later when Argento sent a long ball behind the Lyons' back line, which was caught up to by Grace Devanny who scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season, making it 2-0.
With 32:39 to play in the first half, Wesleyan pushed their advantage to three when Wiley sent in a corner kick before Danielle Soto, fresh off the bench, rose above the defenders and headed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
The visitors would add two more goals in the second half. The first, just 1:59 into the frame when Abby Meyers set up Hannah Landel before Katie O'Connell registered her second goal of the season with 1:25 to play.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return to the MHC Soccer Field on Wednesday, October 27 and will take on New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Coast Guard at 6 p.m.
