Soccer Falls to Wheaton in NEWMAC Play

Norton, Mass. - October 9, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell to host Wheaton College, 9-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play, while Wheaton improves to 7-3-2 overall with a 3-1-1 mark against league foes. Wheaton held a 37-3 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play and were granted seven corner kicks.

For Mount Holyoke, sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Breen (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) posted 11 saves in the setback, while their counterpart, Kaitlin Gossart, notched a pair of saves in the victory.

Wheaton applied early pressure on Mount Holyoke and finally broke through in the 26th minute when Chloe Troy beat Breen on a shot following a cross from Nevaeh Petruzzi for her sixth goal of the season. From there, Wheaton continued to blast shots on net but Mount Holyoke and Breen kept the game 1-0 at the halftime break.

In the second half, however, Wheaton College came out and recorded 23 shots and registered eight goals including a hat trick from Petruzzi, as well as a pair of goals from Sadie Recht.

Up next, the Lyons will return to the MHC Soccer Field and will host Clark University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13.
