Lacrosse falls to visiting Coast Guard

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The U.S. Coast Guard Academy piled up five goals in the opening six minutes and rode a 9-0 lead after one quarter to defeat the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team 23-1 in a NEWMAC game on Wednesday evening on the MHC Turf.

Coast Guard (8-4, 3-3 NEWMAC) outshot Mount Holyoke (1-11, 0-5 NEWMAC) by a 40-2 margin and won 21 of 27 draws in keeping the ball away from the Lyons for the great majority of the game.

Abby McAllister led the Bears with six goals and six assists, including three goals and two assists in the first quarter. Caitlyn Coates also potted six goals. Laine Weber scored four times and Sarah Skurat dished out four assists for Coast Guard. Katie Kogler had a game-high nine draw controls for the Bears.

Mount Holyoke missed the services of its leading scorer, Mount Holyoke sophomore Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.), due to injury for the first time in Bisson's career.

Weber's goal with 10:43 to go in the second quarter made it 10-0, instigating a running clock for the remainder of the game. Coast Guard led 15-0 at the break.

Senior Caroline Thompson (Harwich, Mass.) broke up the shutout with 6:43 left in the third quarter to make it 16-1, taking a pass from junior Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) and streaking downhill for her fifth goal of the season and Phillips' fourth assist.

Phillips and first-year Mackenzie Hillman (Newington, Conn.) had two draw controls apiece for Mount Holyoke, and Phillips, Thompson, first-year Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.), and sophmore Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.) had one caused turnover apiece.

First-year goalie Syd Baker (Needham, Mass.) posted 13 saves for Mount Holyoke. Maici Mintchwarner made no saves and allowed no goals in the first half to earn the goalie victory for Coast Guard.

Mount Holyoke hosts Clark University on Saturday at 1pm; Coast Guard will host Emerson Saturday at 12pm.
