Simmons withstands hot start by lacrosse in season opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team opened the 2024 season by hosting Simmons University on Saturday, and the Lyons took a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter before the visiting Sharks charged back to win going away, 17-4.

Julia Chausse scored three goals and Maddie Desimio-Maloney added two goals and five assists to pace Simmons (1-1). Lauren Krupnikoff, Riley Wasiuk, Cameron Richards, Frida Turriza, and Kat Wood added two goals apiece.

Mount Holyoke sophomore Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) personally outscored Simmons 2-1 in the first quarter, and her third unassisted tally early in the second quarter gave Mount Holyoke its 3-1 lead.

Turriza fed Richards with 10:42 to go in the second quarter, beginning a string of five straight goals for the Sharks as they assumed a 6-3 lead. Turriza continued the run with her second goal, Desimio-Malon added back-to-back unassisted goals, and Chausse netted her first goal of the game unassisted for a 6-3 lead with 2:36 left in the half.

Emi Bisson dished to sophomore Langley Berat (New York, N.Y.) for a score to close the gap to 6-4 with 1:28 left, but Chausse returned the three-goal lead to Simmons with under a minute remaining.

Simmons outshot Mount Holyoke 16-8 in the first half, but the margin was 19-4 in the second half for the Sharks as they kept Mount Holyoke from scoring over the final 30 minutes while adding 10 goals to their lead.

Mount Holyoke first-year Syd Baker (Needham, Mass.) made 13 saves in goal for the Lyons, while Anya Younie had four saves for Simmons.

Mount Holyoke will play at Nichols College on Wednesday at 7pm; Simmons will host the University of Hartford Tuesday at 4pm.
