Basketball Falls to NEWMAC-Foe WPI in Season Finale

South Hadley, Mass. - February 22, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team wrapped up the 2019-20 season on Saturday afternoon as the Lyons fell to visiting WPI, 68-36, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Howard Gymnasium.

Leading the Lyons was junior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine), who posted 13 points and four rebounds, while playing in her final game as a Mount Holyoke College Lyon, senior Katlyn Grover (Bernardston, Mass.) netted six points, two rebounds and one block. Junior GraceAnne Woods (Glen Cove, N.Y.) also posted nine points and three rebounds in 29 minutes of action off the bench.

Mount Holyoke College had a great start to the contest, as first-year point guard Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.) would can two free-throws at the 7:14 mark, before a three-pointer from Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) made it 6-3, Lyons at the 5:34 mark. From there, Brooks hit a jumper and followed up with a free-throw, before Woods hit a jumper and followed up with a pair from the charity stripe, giving the hosts a 13-9 led with 2:04 to play in the stanza. With 22 seconds to play in the quarter, Woods hit another jumper following an assist from Woods to give the Lyons a 15-13 lead after one.

WPI used a 22-0 scoring advantage in the second quarter to take a 35-15 lead into the halftime break, then added 17 more before Hayward broke the silence with a free-throw at the 4:56 mark of the third quarter. Woods followed with two more free throws, but the Engineers carried a 58-18 lead into the fourth.

Brooks posted back-to-back lay-ups just 36 seconds apart to give the Lyons 24, before Grover drilled a pair of three pointers in the late goings to put the capstone on her career at Mount Holyoke College. WPI would seal the eventual 68-36 victory in the final seconds of the game.
