Basketball Falls at Babson in NEWMAC Play

Babson Park, Mass. - February 15, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team dropped a 104-33 decision to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Babson College at Staake Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Leading the Lyons was junior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine), who totaled 15 points, as sophomore Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) contributed nine points and five rebounds, as the forward converted a trio of three-pointers in the contest. Sophomore Kelly Lynch (Quincy, Mass.) also had four points and two rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.

Brooks made the Lyons' first points of the game at the 7:08 mark of the first quarter with a lay-up, but Babson continued a 16-2 run to begin the game, ending with a three from Kyra Sanborn-Burch (Tariffville, Conn.) with 3:26 to play in the period. Brooks hit another jumper with 1:54 to go, and drained another at the 23-second mark, wrapping up the Lyons' first-quarter scoring.

McEwen hit the first of her three triples with 6:56 to go in the second quarter, before Brooks hit a lay-up with 4:16 to go, but Mount Holyoke College was still looking at a 36-14 deficit. Brooks made another jumper at the 2:22 mark, as Babson would take a 46-16 lead into the halftime break.

With 6:26 to go in the third, McEwen connected from three again, before Sanborn-Burch converted a lay-up with 4:32 remaining, making it 58-21, Beavers. Brooks kicked off the fourth-quarter scoring for the Lyons, making a jumper at the 6:40 mark of the stanza, before McEwen drilled another three-pointer in Mount Holyoke College's ensuing possession. From there, Lynch made a pair of jumpers with two free throws from Brooks in the middle, but Babson prevailed, 104-33.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College travels to local-foe Smith College on Wednesday, February 19 for another NEWMAC contest. The tip is set for 7 p.m.
