Cobleskill, N.Y. - January 7, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team traveled to SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday evening and suffered a 59-33 loss to the Fighting Tigers inside Iorio Gymnasium.
Junior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) was impressive nonetheless, as she recorded her ninth double double of the season, collecting 16 points and 18 rebounds in the defeat. First-year point guard Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.) posted seven points, all of which came in the first half, while also picked up five rebounds and dishing out four assists. Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) also had a solid performance, as she produced seven rebounds to go with three points, three assists and three steals.
Brooks converted a jumper 3:13 into the contest for the Lyons' first bucket of the contest, but the Fighting Tigers jumped out to an early 10-2 advantage with 4:33 to play in the first quarter. Kyra Sanborn-Burch (Tariffville, Conn.) hit a free throw with 2:44 remaining before drilling a three-pointer as time expired in the frame to pull the Lyons to within two points.
Hayward tied up the score at 12 apiece with a jumper in the Lyons first possession of the second quarter, before the first-year hit a triple at the 7:43 mark to even the score at 15. SUNY Cobleskill would then score five unanswered, only to have Mount Holyoke College storm back once again with another jumper from Hayward, followed by a basket from McEwen at 6:04. Despite a late basket from Brooks, the Fighting Tigers would start to pull away towards the end of the second quarter, going into the halftime break leading 31-23.
Brooks and Aries were able to convert free throws in the third quarter before Brooks hit another jumper 59 seconds into the fourth quarter to pace the Lyons. Brooks would make two-consecutive lay-ups just 40 seconds apart later in the frame, but the Lyons would eventual suffer a 59-33 loss to SUNY Cobleskill.
Mount Holyoke College falls to 1-12 on the year with the loss, while the Fighting Tigers improve to 6-4 overall. The Lyons were just 13-of-59 (22.0%) from the field in the setback, while the hosts shot 38.2 percent (26-for-68).
