South Hadley, Mass. - February 12, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team dropped a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) decision to visiting Clark University, as the Lyons fell 90-37 in Howard Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Leading the Lyons was junior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine), who totaled 18 points and nine rebounds. First-year Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.) also chipped in nine points, two rebounds and one assist in the setback.
The Cougars opened the game on a 12-0 run in the first 5:19 before Brooks ended the run with a basket at the 4:24 mark, registering the first points of the game for the Lyons. Brooks drained a jumper to finish off the Lyons' next possession, before Hayward converted a three-pointer to make it a 10-point game with Mount Holyoke College trailing 17-7. Hayward would make another jumper with 49 seconds remaining in the frame, but the Lyons would trail Clark 19-9 after one.
The Lyons cut their deficit to nine with back-to-back lay-ups from Brooks to open the second quarter before the junior canned two free-throws at the 5:18 mark to make it 30-17, Clark. From there, Brooks would make two more lay-ups to keep Mount Holyoke College within 15. The Cougars would then end the half on a 6-0 run to take a 42-21 advantage into the break.
Sanborn-Burch dropped in a lay-up just 2:48 into the second half for the Lyons' first points of the frame, before the first-year hit a three just 29 seconds later to cut Mount Holyoke College's deficit to 18. Brooks would account for the next four points for the Lyons, before Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) wrapped up the third quarter with a jumper, but the Cougars were still leading 68-32.
With 1:49 to play, Hayward canned a jumper and Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) drilled a three with 46 seconds remaining but the Lyons fell to the Cougars, 90-37.
The Lyons were just 15-of-55 (27.3%) in the loss, while the Cougars shot 35-for-71 (49.3%) over 40 minutes of play. Mount Holyoke College is now 1-21 overall with an 0-7 mark against league opponents, while Clark improves to 5-17 on the year with a 1-6 record in the NEWMAC.
