Basketball Drops Decision at Smith in NEWMAC Play

Northampton, Mass. - February 19, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team made the short trip to Smith and dropped a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC0 contest to the Pioneers, 84-32, at Ainsworth Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Leading the Lyons was junior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) posted 12 points and six rebounds, while first-year point guard Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.) posted seven points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 40 minutes of play. 

Sophomore Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) got the Lyons on the board with a three-pointer, which was followed by a three-point play from Brooks just 2:53 later, but Smith still held a 33-6 advantage midway through the second quarter. Brooks then made a jumper with 2:31 remaining in the frame and Hayward converted one of her own on an assist from Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) with 34 seconds to play as the Lyons went into the break trailing 41-10.

Brooks hit a jumper with 6:12 remaining in the third before McEwen drilled her second three pointer with 4:42 on the clock. Hayward converted three free throws in a span of 21 seconds in the later stages of the frame, before the first-year followed up with a lay-up to make it 58-21, Smith.

Delgado made a three just 1:26 into the fourth quarter, before Alicia Chavez (Sylmar, Calif.) made a pair of free throws at the 5:05 mark. Delgado made a layup with 18 seconds to play, but the game would end 84-32 in Smith's favor.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will play its final contest of the 2019-20 season on Saturday, February 22 as the Lyons host WPI at 2 p.m.
