Basketball Drops Conference Opener to Wheaton

Norton, Mass. - January 18, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team took on host Wheaton College in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons fell 81-21 at Emerson Gymnasium.

Leading Mount Holyoke College was Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) as the junior forward posted 12 points and had three rebounds. Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) collected a team-best 10 rebounds, while Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) followed with six of her own.

After giving up the first basket of the game, Mount Holyoke College took a 3-2 advantage with 7:22 to play in the opening frame following a free throw and basket from Brooks. With 5:19 to play in the frame, Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.) converted a jumper to keep the score at five apiece. 

Brooks would add to her scoring total with another good jumper at the 4:23 mark of the second quarter, while Kyra Sanborn-Burch (Tariffville, Conn.) also buried a free throw in the stanza. 

Sanborn-Burch would push her point total to three with a jumper at the 8:22 mark of the third quarter, before Delgado drained a pair of free-throws with 3:45 remaining. 

After Brooks converted a lay up just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, the junior hit a jumper just 28 seconds later to keep the Lyons' offense going. Brooks would go on to make a free throw at the 8:21 mark, before hitting a jumper with 5:59 remaining. From there, Olivia Aries (Brewster, N.Y.) made a pair of free throws to wrap up the scoring for Mount Holyoke College. 

The Lyons drop to 1-15 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Wheaton improves to 6-8 on the year with a 1-0 mark against league opponents. Mount Holyoke College shot just 16.3 percent, while Wheaton posted a 53.4 percent mark from the floor.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to Emerson College on Wednesday, January 22 for a 7:30 p.m. contest versus the Lions.
