Basketball Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Play

Cambridge, Mass. - February 1, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team fell to host MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, 79-15, on Saturday afternoon at the Rockwell Cage. 

Leading the Lyons was first-year point guard Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.), who posted eight points and three rebounds, while junior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) recorded five points and five rebounds, with one steal. 

First-year Kyra Sanborn-Burch (Tariffville, Conn.) had the Lyons' lone basket of the first quarter, which ended a 17-0 run for the Engineers to begin the game. Brooks hit a free-throw at the 6:49 mark of the second quarter as MIT held a 48-3 advantage at the halftime break.

Mount Holyoke College converted a pair of baskets in a span of 46 seconds in the third quarter as Brooks drained a jumper before Hayward hit a three in the Lyons' next possession. From there, Brooks made another jumper at the 4:18 mark, marking the last points for Mount Holyoke College in the third stanza. 

Hayward hit her second three of the game at the 8:34 mark of the fourth, before the first-year made a jumper with five seconds remaining to finish off the game.

The Lyons fall to 1-19 overall and 0-5 in league play with the setback, while MIT improves to 8-10 on the year with a 2-2 record in the NEWMAC.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return home to Howard Gymnasium on Saturday, February 8 as the Lyons host Wellesley at 1 p.m.
