South Hadley, Mass. - February 8, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team fell to visiting Wellesley College, 64-26, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Howard Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the Lyons was sophomore Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) and first-year Kyra Sanborn-Burch (Tariffville, Conn.), who each had seven points, while junior Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) pulled down a team-best eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action.
Wellesley scored the first 14 points of the contest over 6:23 before the Lyons broke the silence with a triple from McEwen at the 1:27 mark of the first quarter. With 21 seconds remaining in the frame, Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, N.Y.) added to the Lyons' point total with a free throw to make it 16-4, Wellesley, after one.
The Blue recorded six unanswered points to begin the second quarter before McEwenn drained a free-throw at the 6:04 mark to make it 22-5, Blue. From there, Sanborn-Burch drained a three-pointer with 3:34 remaining in the half, before Ellie Hayward (Westmoreland, N.H.) converted a lay-up with 2:50 on the clock. Brooks would end the half with a pair of free throws, giving the Lyons 12 points at the break.
Sanborn-Burch opened the Lyons' second-half scoring at the 8:27 mark with a pair of free throws, before Delgado added one of her own with 5:01 on the clock to make it 43-15, Wellesley. From there, Sanborn-Burch would convert another lay-up at 1:41 and Brooks hit one of her own with less than 10 seconds remaining in the frame, as the Blue carried a 51-19 lead into the fourth and final quarter.
McEwen buried a three with 7:38 remaining to give the Lyons 22 points, before brooks followed with a lay-up to push Mount Holyoke College's point total to 24. Down the stretch, Hayward made a lay-up with 3:22 to play, marking the final points for the Lyons.
Wellesley, which improved to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the NEWMAC with the win, shot 34.8% (23-of-66) from the floor, while the Lyons were just 8-for-34 (23.5%) in the setback. Mount Holyoke College is now 1-20 overall and 0-6 in league play.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return to Howard Gymnasium on Wednesday, February 12 for a 7 p.m. contest with Clark in NEWMAC play.
