Mount Holyoke College to Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 8

South Hadley, Mass. - February 5, 2020 - The Mount Holyoke College Department of Physical Education and Athletics is excited to host a National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration on Saturday, February 8. In addition to the celebration, the Mount Holyoke College Department of Physical Eduaction and Athletics is also launching a partnership with the local Girls, Inc. organization.

"National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a perfect opportunity to launch our ongoing partnership with Girls Inc," said Associate Director of Athletics for Programming Erica Lemm. "Our student-athletes are taking advantage of this important day by inspiring middle-school girls to be active, bold, and strong. Through a day of activity and learning, student-athletes will participate in the first of many opportunities to help the girls develop skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership. We're excited about our ongoing engagement with Girls Inc. and look forward to communicating the message behind National Girls and Women in Sports Day with the girls all year long."

Prior to the Mount Holyoke College basketball game on Saturday, February 8, middle-school girls will be coming to campus for engagement with the Lyons' student-athletes, which will include ice breakers, basketball drills, and talk-back activities where the girls will learn about what it's like to attend college and be a collegiate student-athletes. There will then be a lunch in the dining commons, before attending our home basketball game, where the Girls, Inc. attendees will be announced and celebrated during the halftime break of the game.

The local Girls, Inc. organization is for 5-18 year-old girls from the greater-Holyoke, Springfield, and Chicopee, Mass. areas, extending to Westfield, South Hadley, and beyond. The organization's experience includes: benefitting from an all-girl, pro-girl environment of high expectations and mutual respect, participating in carefully researched programs guided by highly trained staff to give them the life skills they need to navigate girlhood and become independent adults and feeling the support of trusted mentors who believe in them and inspire them to live up to their full potential.
