Applications Open for 2020 Coach for College Program at Mount Holyoke College

APPLY HERE TODAY

South Hadley, Mass. - December 5, 2019 - Through the support of Harriet Levine Weissman '58 and her husband, Paul M. Weissman, the Mount Holyoke College Department of Physical Education and Athletics is proud to announce that applications have opened for the Coach for College program during the summer of 2020.

Coach for College is a service learning program that brings together student-athletes from U.S. colleges and universities and Vietnamese university students to teach academics, sports, and life skills at summer camps to children in rural Vietnam. Each participant co-teaches one sport, one academic subject, and a life skills class throughout the camp, and will lead their team in competitions at the end of each week. It is an incredible opportunity for the participants to make a lasting difference in children's lives.

Prior to their travel, Mount Holyoke College's participants will take part in an orientation that will focus on sport pedagogy, community based learning, and Vietnamese language training.

"The Weissman Center for Leadership is thrilled to partner with the Department of Physical Education and Athletics to provide student-athletes with an extraordinary leadership opportunity through Coach for College," said Amy Martin, Director of The Weissman Center for Leadership. "We are so grateful to Harriet and Paul Weissman for making it possible for student-athletes to have a transformative summer experience in Vietnam."

There will be an information session regarding Coach for College on Monday, December 9 from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The information session will be held in Blanchard 205B. Current basketball student-athlete Katlyn Grover '20, who was selected for Coach for College in 2017 will share her experiences and what she learned from the program. "Mount Holyoke College is the first and only NCAA Division III program to participate in the Coach for College program," commented Chair of Physical Education and Director of Athletics, Lori Hendricks '92. "For our winter and multi-sport student-athletes who may not be able to study abroad during the academic year, this experience allows for international service and learning.  I am grateful for Harriet and Paul Weissman's gift and their continuing support of leadership development for our student-athletes."
