Track & Field Places 7th at NEWMAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was a solid day of action at the 2015 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track & Field Championship on Saturday afternoon. The event, which was hosted by MIT at Steinbrenner Stadium, saw Mount Holyoke finish seventh of nine teams on the day. The Lyons were paced by junior Camille Coklow, who repeated as the conference champion in the 100-meter dash.

Coklow had an outstanding effort in her signature outdoor event, posting a time of 12.12 for her second straight conference title. Additionally, the win marks her second consecutive All-Conference First Team honor.

Also performing well was senior Dana Fry, who finished fourth in the 3,000-m steeplechase with a time of 11:53.27. That mark was not only a Division III New England Championship qualifying time, but also a new school record, which she previously set last season (12:01.75). Fry also qualified for DIII New England's in the 10,000-meter run, which she competed in last weekend.

Sophomore Brianna Weir also finished well in the 3,000-meter steeple event, placing eighth overall with a time of 12:10.59. In the 5,000-meter run, junior Elizabeth DeLeon crossed the line with a time of 19:18.34 – good for eighth, while first year Mia Barnes was a DIII New England qualifier in the 10,000-m run, finishing eighth overall with a time of 41:02.38.

Also finishing well on the track was the Lyons 4x100m relay team. First year Shante Henderson, who qualified for DIII New England's last weekend in the Heptathlon, ran the opening leg, followed by senior Amber Legare, first year Maria Lewis and Coklow. The foursome was fifth overall with a time of 51.10.

In the field events, Legare finished fifth in the javelin with a distance of 30.24 meters, while also placing sixth in the shot put with a mark of 10.62 meters. She qualified for next week's meet earlier this season in the shot put. Senior Jennie Ochterski also had a great performance in the hammer throw, posting a distance of 37.66 meters.

MIT tallied a score of 249 points to win this year's meet. It marked their seventh straight conference title. WPI claimed second place with a score of 125 points, Wheaton finished third (105 points), while Wellesley College recorded a fourth place performance (95 points). Coast Guard finished fifth (68 points), while Springfield (65 points), Mount Holyoke College (30 points), Babson (27 points) and Smith College (15 points) rounded out the final sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth positions.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next weekend when it competes at the 2015 Division III New England Championships. The event, which will be hosted right back at MIT, begins on Friday and runs through Saturday.
