Track & Field Opens Season at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College indoor track & field team got its 2014-15 campaign underway on Saturday, competing at the non-team scoring 2014 Smith Winter Classic, hosted at Smith College. The Lyons saw a number of outstanding efforts on the day, including a win by junior Camille Coklow in the 60-meter dash.

Coklow (Chicago, Ill./The Latin School of Chicago) posted a time of 7.89 to claim victory in one of her signature indoor events. She went on to post fourth overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.20. Coklow also ran the anchor leg of the 4x200 relay team, helping the group to fourth overall with a time of 1:55.76.

Other members of the relay included first years Shante Henderson (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Theatre Arts School) and Maria Lewis (Boston, Mass./Fenway), along with senior Sarah Fleming (Elk Grove, Calif./Sacramento Country Day School) and Coklow.

Henderson went on to finish sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 10.02. In the 5000-meter run, the Lyons had a strong showing as sophomore Becca Rogers (Tucson, Ariz./ St. Gregory College Prepatory School), placed third (18:50.39), senior Dana Fry (Tempe, Ariz./Miss Porter's School) finished fourth (18:56.72), junior Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberlane) was eighth (19:46.50), while first year Mia Barnes (Thornville, Ohio/Monteverde Friends School) placed 10th (20:41.89).

In the field events, senior Jennie Ochterski (Middlefield, Conn./Cogincahug) was ninth in the shot put with a throw of 9.31 meters. She went on to place sixth in the 20lb. weight throw with a mark of 12.20 meters.

Senior Regina Crawford (Dorchester, Mass./Fenway) was 12th in the shot put with a throw of 8.83 meters, while classmate Jenny Spicola (River Edge, N.J./Walnut Hill School for the Arts) placed seventh in the 20lb. weight throw with a mark of 10.17 meters.

The Lyons are now idle until January 17 when they return to action at the Tufts Invitational. Action at that meet gets underway at 11am.
