Tennis Falls to Winona State to Open Florida Trip

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team took to the courts to open their spring trip in Florida, facing-off against Winona State University out of Division II. Despite several strong efforts, the Lyons shouldered a tough 5-2 loss to the Warriors. Winona State improves to 6-5 while MHC is now 4-4 on the season.

Action opened in third doubles as MHC seniors Joy Maran and Ayame Yazawa bested Caitlin Anderson and Mya Lubben by a 6-3 margin. From first doubles, Beth Murman and Kaisey Skibba defeated Lyons junior Ching-Ching Huang and rookie Annissa Aamoum, 6-4, while at two, Kendra Kappes and Tayla Card earned a close 7-5 victory over MHC junior Catherine Peabody and sophomore Anya Gerasimova.

In singles action, Card bested Gerasimova at four by a 6-1, 6-2 margin. From five, Aamoum grabbed the Lyons a point with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win against Faith Young. At six, senior captain Clara Wang shouldered a tough 6-3, 6-1 loss to Anderson, while at two, MHC grabbed another point as Huang defeated Kappes, 6-4, 6-0.

At three, Skibba earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Peabody, while the ones closed things out as Murman played a hard-fought match against Yazawa, earning the 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) victory.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday with a pair of matches. The Lyons will face Scranton at 8am at the USTA Center, followed by a 3:30pm match against Lees-McRae - which will take place at Sanlando Park.
