Tennis Finishes Third at 2019 Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Action at the 2019 Seven Sisters Tennis Championships concluded on Sunday at Vassar College in which Mount Holyoke finished third overall with a mark of 2-2 on the weekend. The Lyons move to 4-2 on the season after falling to the host Brewers, 5-0, before besting Smith, 4-1 on Sunday.

In the opening match against the Brewers, Frances Cornwall paced the effort at first singles with a 6-0, 7-5 victory against Lyons senior Ayame Yazawa. From two, Sarra Yekta bested junior Ching-Ching Huang by a tight 6-4, 6-4, while at three, Melina Stavropoulos earned a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win against senior Clara Wang.

Doubles action saw Vassar dominate as the first duo of Morgane Flournoy and Tara Edwards posted a 6-1, 6-0 score against MHC junior Catherine Peabody and sophomore Anya Gerasimova. In second doubles, Cara Kizilbash and Vista Grinde combined to best senior Joy Maran and rookie Annissa Aamoum, 6-2, 6-0.

Against Smith, the Lyons bounced back with a solid victory. In singles action, Yazawa defeated Joanna Kim from one by a 6-0, 6-2 margin. Two saw Peabody earn the win over Yena Li by a 6-0, 6-2 score. In third singles, Gerasimova defeated Kara Van Allen, 6-4, 6-1, before Smith's Elsa Hillis got the Pioneers their lone points with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Lyons rookie Nikki Cheng.

Doubles action featured Huang and rookie Hannah Middleton in the lone match, taking on Betsy Hillier and Gabby Mingoletti. The Lyons duo prevailed, 6-1, 6-1 to conclude action at this year's event. At the conclusion of the event, Huang and Peabody were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mount Holyoke returns to the courts next Saturday when it travels to Bates College for a 12pm contest.
