Tennis Splits in Opening Action at Seven Sisters

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team opened its spring slate on Saturday with day one action at the 2019 Seven Sisters Championship. The event, which is being hosted by Vassar College, saw the Lyons post a 3-2 win in their opener against Bryn Mawr College, before falling 5-0 to Wellesley College to round out the day.

In the opener against the Owls, the Lyons clawed their way back into the match as Bryn Mawr grabbed victories from the first two singles. Sophomore Anya Gerasimova bested Caroline Horvatits in third singles, notching a score of 6-1, 7-5.

The fourth flight singles saw senior Madison Rosen defeat Francesca Caramaza by a 6-1, 6-2 margin. Finally in doubles action, junior Catherine Peabody and rookie Annissa Aamoum sealed the victory with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Christina Xue and Libby Hemp.

In the afternoon match, the Lyons shouldered tough opening losses in doubles as Peabody and Gerasimova fell to Libby Chang and Selina Peng by a 6-2, 6-1 margin in the first flight. Senior Joy Maran and Aamoum squared-off against Cinji Lee and Lily Chu in second doubles, falling by a 6-1, 6-2 margin.

In singles, Justine Huang bested senior Ayame Yazawa in the first flight, 6-1, 6-2, while Michelle Shen defeated senior Clara Wang, 6-0, 6-1. In the second singles match-up, it proved to be a tough battle as Lyons junior Ching-Ching Huang won the opening set by a 6-4 margin. Michaela Markwart battled back to take the second set, 7-5, carrying that momentum into the final set for a 10-4 win and match decision.

Mount Holyoke (3-1) is right back in action on Sunday, taking on the host Brewers at 10:30am. The Lyons close out action at the tournament at 1:30pm, battling area and conference-rival, Smith at 1:30pm.
