Tennis Upended by Babson in NEWMAC Match

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Babson College tennis team used a solid effort in doubles, coupled with strong singles wins to defeat Mount Holyoke College, 6-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the MHC Tennis Courts. With the win, the Beavers move to 7-4 with a perfect 4-0 conference record, while the Lyons are now 8-8 and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.

Doubles action saw Babson gain its first point from three as Nastasia Tamarkin and Alexandra Blizard combined for an 8-3 win over MHC senior Joy Maran and sophomore Anya Gerasimova. At two, the pairing of Mary Kille and Emily Roeper gutted out a narrow 8-7 (7-3) win over Lyons' junior Catherine Peabody and rookie Annissa Aamoum.

Action in the doubles concluded at one as Carolina Merz and Marissa Madison defeated MHC senior Ayame Yazawa and junior Ching-Ching Huang, 8-3.

Shifting to singles, Merz put the Beavers up 4-0 after besting Yazawa at one by a 6-1, 6-3 margin. Roeper then secured the match victory from four, earning a 6-3, 6-0 win against Gerasimova.

Tamarkin then earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Huang at two to grab the 6-0 match lead. Mount Holyoke bounced back beginning at three as Peabody defeated Madison, 6-2, 6-1. Aamoum then powered her way to a hard-fought win, defeating Kille, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). The final match of the day went to the Lyons as rookie Hannah Middleton took on Blizard from six. Each player won a set, but Middleton came out victorious with a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker.

Mount Holyoke is back on the court on Tuesday when it hosts Springfield at 4:30pm. Babson is also in action on Tuesday, hosting Wellesley at 3:30pm.
