SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Ashley English scored on her own corner kick, and four teammates followed with goals of their own as No. 18 nationally ranked MIT won 5-0 at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday in the Lyons' NEWMAC home opener at MHC Soccer Field.

Lining up from the right corner, English struck a high, bending corner kick that settled into the left netting, giving the visiting Engineers (7-1-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of the game.

A sharp and physical Mount Holyoke side fought gamely to keep the game close, but the Engineers added two late goals.

The Engineers outshot the Lyons (1-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) by a 32-0 margin and enjoyed a 13-0 edge in corner kicks.

MIT went into halftime with a 2-0 lead, thanks to Brigette Wang's goal in the 39th minute. Wang caught up to a lead pass from Nikki Elliott and lunged to toe the ball inside the far post.

MIT made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute as Karenna Groff followed her own corner kick, dribbled into the box and set up Lexi Spinetta for an open finish at the goal.

In the 85th minute, MIT was awarded a free kick 18 yards in front of the Lyons' goal, and Sean Luk buried a perfect shot around the Mount Holyoke wall and into the right corner of the net.

Another free kick from close range, this time just outside the left border of the penalty area, set up MIT's final score. A high entry pass into the face of the goal was headed into the air by a Lyons defender. MIT's Alice Vranka alertly headed the ball down to teammate Ceci Munoz, who was able to flick it with the outside of her shoe and redirect it past first-year goalie Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and in.

Govea made 10 saves in the game, including two from point-blank range. First-year Ada Siepmann's (Vlotho, Germany) physical defense helped the Lyons keep the Engineers close for most of the game.

Mount Holyoke next plays at Western New England University in a non-league game Wednesday at 4pm. MIT hosts Tufts Tuesday at 4pm.
