SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College staved off the Mount Holyoke College soccer team's comeback attempt in a 3-1 NEWMAC victory Saturday, in the season finale for both teams and on Senior Day for the host Lyons.

Wellesley (6-7-3, 1-6-3 NEWMAC) knocked on the door numerous times before scoring, including a wide-open chance from 10 yards out by Elina Saab-Sunden that passed over the crossbar.

The scoreless tie was broken in the 38th minute on a Mount Holyoke own goal. A cross from along the left endline by Coral Crossland, intended for Juliana Mytko in front of the goal, was deflected by Mount Holyoke first-year goalie Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.), but the ricochet hit sophomore defender Sonia McCollum (Oakland, Calif.) and into the goal, through no fault of McCollum's as she slid to cut off the pass.

Wellesley's lead remained 1-0 at the half, with Govea making five saves as Wellesley outshot Mount Holyoke by a 13-4 margin.

Wellesley made it a 2-0 game in the 59th minute, as Cindy Zeng played a long ball into the penalty area, where Paige Sangston caught up to the ball over nothing but open space and one-timed it into the goal from about 10 yards out.

Mount Holyoke (2-15-1, 1-9-0 NEWMAC) answered less than four minutes later, as first-year Ada Siepmann (Vlotho, Germany) made a perfectly timed run at sophomore Hannah Keochakian's (Amherst, Mass.) corner kick and headed her second goal of the year into the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with 28:14 remaining in the game.

But Wellesley regained the two-goal advantage only 21 seconds after the ensuing whistle, as Mytko hit Saab-Sunden streaking up the right sideline, and Saab-Sunden crossed to Marleigh Ausbrooks for a right-footed finish in front of the right post.

Wellesley outshot Mount Holyoke 20-11 overall, but the teams were tied 7-7 in that category in the second half.

Shannon Breen played the second half in goal for Mount Holyoke and made one save. Wellesley's Kendall Lincoln tended goal for the entire game, making three saves.

The game marked the final appearance in the Lyons uniform for five Mount Holyoke seniors -- Carolina Alvarez (Miami, Fla.), Lo Jean-Jacques (Miami Beach, Fla.), Fionna Kennedy (Wilton, N.H.), Posy LaBombard (Waitsfield, Vt.), and Sarah Forster (Worcester, Mass.) -- who were celebrated with family and supporters before the game.
