SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Sophomore Hannah Keochakian broke a scoreless tie with a beautiful goal in the 74th minute to lift Mount Holyoke College to a 1-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday night, as the Lyons gained their first victory of the season in their home opener.

In an evenly played non-league contest, the Lyons (1-2) were outshot by a 27-11 margin, although the hosts had an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

Colby-Sawyer (0-3-1) attacked more aggressively than Mount Holyoke, but challenging Lyons first-year goalkeeper Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) with the majority of their shots from long distance failed to produce a score. Hannah Himes, Kara Keiper, Grace Walsh, Sam Bishop and Bridget O'Connell all attempted three or more shots, with O'Connell ringing up eight attempts, yet only one required a save from Govea, who notched her first collegiate shutout.

Both teams missed a pair of golden chances to score in the first half, leaving the game scoreless until the 74th minute. Mount Holyoke first-year midfielder Charlotte Moynihan (North Attleborough, Mass.) received a back pass from senior defender Carolina Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) near the right sideline, 20 yards behind midfield. Moynihan one-timed a pass ahead, between two CSC defenders and to the feet of Keochakian (Amherst, Mass.), who carried past a defender for 20 yards, then looped a shot over the head of advancing CSC goalie Alexis Lebreton, settling into the side net for the go-ahead score. Keochakian also scored a goal against the Chargers one season ago in a 2-1 road win for the Lyons.

Govea and Lebreton finished with seven saves apiece.

All five of Keochakian's shots in the game were on goal.

Mount Holyoke next plays host to Wentworth Institute on Saturday at 12pm, in the first Mount Holyoke Game of the Week of the academic year.
