WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Senior defender Carolina Alvarez and first-year forward Rachel Baleto (Schertz, Texas) claimed all-tournament honors, as the Mount Holyoke College soccer team fell 6-0 to the University of New England on Sunday afternoon to conclude the Owls Kickoff Classic at Westfield State University.
The Lyons (0-2) fell into a 3-0 deficit within the game's first 20 minutes and trailed 5-0 at halftime. The Nor'easters (3-0) of UNE, who were Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinalists in 2021 with a 12-6-1 record, added one goal to their lead in a more evenly played second half.
UNE outshot MHC by a 22-4 margin in the game with a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, getting one goal apiece from Tori Keyes, Emily Martin, Lizzie Frattaroli, Olivia King, Karley Belisle and Katie Rokes.
Behind Alvarez's (Miami, Fla.) strong defense, junior goalkeeper Shannon Breen (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) made five saves and allowed one goal in the second 45 minutes of the game. First-year goalie Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) made two saves in the first half.
Putting shots on goal for the Lyons were sophomore Sonia McCollum (Oakland, Calif.) and first-year Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.).
Mount Holyoke will face Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday at 6pm in the Lyons' home opener.
