Lacrosse falls 18-6 at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sophomore Mackenzie Hillman and first-year Juliana Spaulding scored two goals apiece for the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team as the Lyons fell 18-6 at Coast Guard in a NEWMAC game Wednesday night at Cadet Memorial Field.

Coast Guard (5-5, 3-3 NEWMAC) evened its overall and conference records with its third win in its past four games. The Bears stand alone in sixth place in the conference standings. Mount Holyoke (3-9, 1-5 NEWMAC) is tied with Clark and Emerson for eighth place in the league.

Laine Weber had four goals and three assists for the Bears, while Abby McAllister had three goals and two assists and Kira Howard had three goals and one assist. Isabella Judge, Caitlyn Coates and Hannah Warnke added two goals apiece.

Hillman (Newington, Conn.) recorded her third straight two-goal game, and Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) notched her ninth multi-goal game of the season.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first four minutes before the Lyons slowed down the Bears, holding them scoreless for over six minutes while Hillman posted MHC's first score.

Coast Guard rallied again for four goals in less than four minutes to assume a 7-1 lead with 1:45 still to play in the first quarter. Spaulding scored her 32nd goal this season with 58 seconds left in the period, using an assist from junior Marielle Welch (Silver Spring, Md.), to make it 7-2.

After outshooting MHC 14-6 in the first quarter, Coast Guard outscored Mount Holyoke 4-1 in the second quarter with a 7-3 shots advantage. Spaulding tallied MHC's score on an assist from junior Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.), Bisson's 23rd assist of the year.

Hillman scored, assisted by junior Langley Berat (New York, N.Y.), to cap a third quarter that saw the Bears take a game-high 13-goal lead on Judge's final score with 4:14 to go.

MHC played Coast Guard evenly (2-2) in the fourth quarter on an 8-6 shots disadvantage. First-year Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alberta) scored her first career goal on a free-position shot, and senior Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) tallied the game's final goal, her fourth of the season.

First-year Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) made 11 saves for Mount Holyoke, while three goalies combined for five saves for the Bears.

Mount Holyoke plays at Clark on Saturday at 4pm.
