SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- MIT responded to Mackenzie Hillman's game-opening goal with 11 unanswered scores to finish out the period, as the visiting Engineers cruised to a 23-2 victory over the Mount Holyoke lacrosse team in a NEWMAC game played in a constant rain Saturday on the MHC Turf.

Sydney Pyon and Annika Lam scored five goals apiece and Julianne Flusche added four to lead MIT (6-5, 5-0 NEWMAC), which remains undefeated in conference play. Ashley Thomas had two goals and four assists, and Jillian Butler added two goals and two assists.

Hillman (Newington, Conn.) gave Mount Holyoke (3-8, 1-4 NEWMAC) a 1-0 lead 80 seconds into the game after the Lyons controlled the opening draw. Hillman scored again to lead off the fourth quarter after a draw control by junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.), giving Hillman 10 goals on the season.

The game was all Engineers once they took over the lead, though Mount Holyoke held MIT to three goals on five shots in a strong defensive display in the second quarter. MIT outshot Mount Holyoke 17-3 in the first quarter and 42-9 for the game.

First-year Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alberta), the conference leader in caused turnovers, had three to lead the Lyons, while Hillman and senior Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) had two apiece.

First-year goalie Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) made several outstanding saves in the game and finished with 11. MIT starter Pauline Vien had two saves in the first quarter, and Molly Dulde had three saves over the next three quarters for the Engineers.

Mount Holyoke plays its next two games on the road: at Coast Guard Wednesday at 6pm and at Clark Saturday at 7pm.
