Pioneers pull away from Lyons in second quarter of NEWMAC opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Smith College's Layna Fitzgerald scored seven goals, five while the Pioneers turned a 2-1 deficit into an 8-2 lead, in a 15-4 win over the Mount Holyoke lacrosse team on Friday night at the MHC Turf, in the NEWMAC opener for both teams.

Smith (4-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) had a 38-22 advantage in shots, including 24-15 in shots on goal, and managed to outscore Mount Holyoke (2-2, 0-1) in each quarter, including a decisive 6-1 difference in the second quarter.

Sadie Tschider scored a goal and dished out five assists for the Pioneers, Kyra Hawk contributed three goals and two assists, and Caroline Sanders scored twice.

Junior Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) had two goals and an assist for the Lyons, and first-year Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) also scored twice.

Three Smith goalies combined for 11 saves, while first-year Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) made nine saves for Mount Holyoke, including seven in the second half. Sophomore Mackenzie Hillman (Newington, Conn.) had a game-high six draw controls for Mount Holyoke, and first-year Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alberta) caused a game-high three turnovers.

Mount Holyoke travels to the Washington, D.C., area next week to play at Hood College on Monday at 5pm and at Marymount (Va.) on Thursday at 4pm.
