Mader scores twice in loss to No. 14 Babson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- No. 14 nationally ranked Babson College continued its dominant play against Mount Holyoke and the NEWMAC in general with a 24-2 win over the host Lyons in a conference lacrosse game Wednesday night on the MHC Turf.

The visiting Beavers (4-2, 3-0 NEWMAC) scored a modest two goals in the opening nine minutes of the game before finishing the first quarter with an 8-0 lead, then got the running game clock started with two more goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter.

The defending NEWMAC champions built a 23-0 lead after Mia Fierro's unassisted goal with 8:37 left in the fourth quarter before allowing two late goals by Mount Holyoke.

Lyons junior Elle Mader (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave the home crowd a jolt with 6:00 left in the game, taking a pass from senior Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) along the left wing and driving in for the score. Mader scored again on a free-position shot in the final minute, giving her 15 goals and six multi-goal games on the season.

Eleven players scored for Babson, including three apiece by Amelia Novitch, Lilly Bedard, Mia Fierro, and Jessica Evans. Novitch also had three assists and Bedard had two helpers, while Tatum Sands, Ellie Hilsabeck, Michaela Downer and Kathryn Blake scored two goals apiece.

Clare Connolly assured Babson's possession domination in the game with 21 draw controls.

First-year Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) made eight saves for the Lyons, while three Babson goalies combined to make two saves. Babson outshot Mount Holyoke by a 42-6 margin and won 25 of 27 draws.

First-year Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.), junior Alex Twomey (Nutley, N.J.), and first-year Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alberta) caused two turnovers apiece, with McFadden collecting a team-high three ground balls.

Mount Holyoke (3-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) travels to Wheaton College for its next game, Saturday at 1pm.
