Lacrosse Suffers Setback to Emerson in Conference Play

South Hadley, Mass. - March 26, 2022 - Despite an eight-goal drive from senior Allie Brown (Burlington, Vt.), the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competitor Emerson, 15-11, on Saturday afternoon. 

The Lyons now have a season record of 1-5 and 0-2 in conference play while the Emerson Lions improve to 6-2 and 1-1 in NEWMAC play. Mount Holyoke tied with Emerson on draws, both controlling 15, while the Emerson Lions had a significant 37-23 lead in ground balls. Emerson also held the advantage in shots, recording 38 to the Lyon's 27.

Accompanying her eight goals, Brown also posted three ground balls and an assist. Junior Lucy Stone (Peachtree City, Ga.) notched five points from two goals and three assists with three ground balls, while senior Emma Legacki (Pennington, N.J.) recorded a goal and two ground balls.

On the defensive end, first-year Liv Naaman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) posted three ground balls and a caused turnover, while in the net first-year Emma Louise Tower (Dover, N.H.) notched 14 saves and six ground balls. 

Mount Holyoke started off the game with a goal from Brown after a pass from Stone in 2:07 of play. Emerson responded by gaining the draw control and then a quick goal 19 seconds later by Julia Burns, followed by two more goals. The Lyons posted their second goal of the game as Stone passed the ball to Brown with 4:27 remaining on the clock. Both teams held each other off until the clock expired, ending the period with Emerson in the slight lead 3-2 after the first quarter.

Emerson started off the second quarter quick with a goal by Callie Krosin, assisted by Ainsley Basic, just 23 seconds after Basic gained control of the draw. Mount Holyoke responded with a goal from Brown after a pass from Stone. Emerson followed with two goals, until Brown posted an unassisted goal 6:49 into play. Jules Rein of Emerson recorded an unassisted goal. Legacki notched a goal after a pass from Brown with 4:24 remaining on the clock. Emerson followed with another goal until Brown recorded her third goal of the quarter with 3:23 to go. The two teams held each other out of the net with Emerson holding an 8-6 lead over Mount Holyoke after the second period. 

Emerson started the second half with a goal from Burns 47 seconds into the third quarter. Mount Holyoke answered as Brown converted a free-position opportunity into a goal. Brown continued her streak, scoring an unassisted goal 6:39 into play, followed by an unassisted goal by Stone just 14 seconds later. Emerson followed with two goals until Stone recorded her second goal of the quarter with 2:05 remaining. The clock ended the third period, with Emerson in the lead 11-10. 

Emerson posted a 4-0 run in the first 5:22 of play in the final period. Both teams were able to hold each other out of the net until Brown notched her eighth goal of the game with 56 seconds to go. Legacki was able to gain control of the draw, with Brown attempting one final shot until the clock expired, with the Emerson Lions taking the win 15-11. 

Up next, Mount Holyoke will host NEWMAC opponent Springfield College on Saturday, April 2. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
