Lacrosse Falls to Non-Conference Eastern Connecticut State in Season Opener

South Hadley, Mass. - March 5, 2022 - Despite four goals from senior attacker Emma Legacki (Pennington, N.J.), the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team fell in non-conference play to visitor Eastern Connecticut State, 19-7, in their 2021-2022 season opener on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lyons have a record of 0-1, while Eastern Connecticut State improves to 2-0 with the win. The Warriors held a significant advantage on the draws, controlling 16 to the Lyon's 9. Eastern Connecticut State finished the game with 44 shots to Mount Holyoke College's 19.

Along with four goals from Legacki, first-year Hannah Bisson (South Hadley, Mass.) found the back of the net twice in her collegiate-debut, while senior Allie Brown (Burlington, Vt.) scored a goal, posted two assists, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls. First-year Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior Lucy Stone (Peachtree City, Ga.) both recorded two assists each. In net, first-year Emma Tower (Dover, N.H.) notched 12 saves. 

Eastern Connecticut State started the game off with a 6-0 run until Legacki found the back of the net after a pass from Phillips 6:05 into the contest. The Warriors responded with an unassisted goal from Caroline Stent before the Legacki recorded another goal assisted by Phillips. Forty-two seconds later, Legacki notched a third goal after a pass from Brown. Eastern Connecticut State answered with another goal from Stent bringing the Warriors to an 8-3 lead after the first quarter. 

Eastern Connecticut State started the second quarter with a 4-0 run until Legacki scored her fourth goal of the day, assisted by Brown with 4:29 remaining in the first half. The Warriors responded with a goal from Stent with 1:48 remaining until the clock expired with Eastern Connecticut State taking a 14-4 lead after the first half.

Kaylee Drobish of Eastern Connecticut State started the third quarter off by posting an unassisted goal 1:18 into the period. Mount Holyoke responded when Bisson scored her first collegiate goal after a pass from Stone 2:37 into the third quarter. The two teams remained scoreless until Bisson found the back of the net again with 5:42 remaining in the third period. Thirty-eight seconds later, Eastern Connecticut's Chloe Miller scored an unassisted goal until the clock expired, ending the third period with the Warriors in the lead 16-6.

Leading the final quarter of the game, Eastern Connecticut State recorded two goals until Brown scored her first goal of the 2021-2022 campaign after a pass from Stone with 2:39 remaining in the game. With just 23 seconds on the clock, Drobish scored a final goal for the Warriors after granted a free-position shot, ending the game with a win for Eastern Connecticut State 19-7.  

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to North Adams, Mass. to face off MCLA in non-conference play on March 8 for a 4 p.m. contest.
