Lacrosse Drops Decision to Farmingdale State in Non-Conference Play

Clearwater, Fla. - March 16, 2022 - Despite four goals from senior Allie Brown (Burlington, Vt.), the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team fell in non-conference play to Farmingdale State, 12-8, in their second game in Florida on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lyons have a record of 1-3, while Farmingdale State improves to 2-4 with the win. The Rams held the advantage on the draws, controlling 13 to the Lyon's 10, while Mount Holyoke held an 18-12 margin in ground balls. The Lyons finished the game with 29 shots to Farmindale State's 26.

Along with four goals from Brown, senior Emma Legacki (Pennington, N.J.) found the back of the net twice, while sophomore Caroline Thompson (Harwich, Mass.) posted two points on one goal and one assist. Junior Lucy Stone (Peachtree City, Ga.) notched three points on one goal and two assists. On the defensive side, first-year Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) recorded one assist, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers, while in net, first-year Emma Tower (Dover, N.H.) notched seven saves. 

Farmingdale State started off the game gaining control of the draw until Athena Vogiatzis scored the first goal of the day 1:23 into the first quarter. Vogiatzis posted a second goal in 3:59 of play until Brown gained control of the ball, notching a goal after a pass from Stone. Farmingdale State recorded a 5-0 run until the period ended with the Rams in the lead 7-1 after the first quarter. 

Mount Holyoke started off the second quarter with a second goal from Brown in 1:24 of play, followed by a goal from Megan Diamond of Farmingdale State. The Lyons responded as Thompson passed the ball to Brown who notched a third goal of the day with 8:21 remaining on the clock. The two teams traded possession of the ball in back-and-forth play until junior Erin Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) passed the ball to Thompson to score a goal with 3:32 to go. Farmingdale's Vogiatzis posted a final goal of the period with 57 seconds left until the clock expired, leaving the Rams in the lead 9-4 after the first half.

The Lyons started the third quarter off with an unassisted goal from Legacki in 2:32 of play, followed by a goal from Stone after a pass from Phillips. Farmingdale State answered with a goal from Diamond after being granted a free-position opportunity with 8:13 to go. Both teams battled hard until Stone passed the ball to Brown who netted her fourth goal of the day with 15 seconds remaining on the clock. Farmingdale State had the slight lead after the third quarter 10-8.

In the final quarter of the game, both teams kept each other out of the net until Farmingdale State's Anna Zaborowska recorded a goal with 6:28 remaining on the clock. Diamond followed with a goal after gaining a free-position opportunity with 5:22 to go. The two teams held each other off until the period ended, with Farmingdale State securing the win 12-8.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to face off MIT in their first conference play of the season on March 19. The game will begin at 12 p.m.
