BOSTON, Mass. – A huge first half helped lift the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team to a 21-3 victory at Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday afternoon. The victory moves the visiting Lyons to 6-5 and 1-2 in conference play, while the home Lions are now 0-6 and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
MHC opened the scoring quickly, holding a 3-0 edge through the first 10 minutes of the first half. Rookie Caroline Flynn scored at 24:55, then fed the ball to classmate Abby Baldwin for her first of the game at 22:58. Junior captain Julianna Rankin made it a three-goal advantage at 20:26.
The Lyons went on a 5-0 spurt beginning at 13:14 as junior Reina Torrez-Miner buried a pass from Rankin, followed by back-to-back scores from Baldwin to make it 6-0 at 9:21. Senior Deyscha Smith, who assisted on Baldwin's third tally, recorded a score of her own from classmate Mazzie Meotti, before assisting once more on the eighth goal of the span by Baldwin at 7:25.
Emerson got on the scoreboard less than 30 seconds later as Kelli Mark collected a feed from Kayla McNamara for the goal past Lyons keeper Mia Wysocki, but the Lyons countered once again as Baldwin notched her fourth of the game.
The homestanding Lyons pulled to within 9-2 at 6:14 on a score from Camille Mumford, but MHC closed out the half on a 4-0 run. Rankin scored a pair of goals in the run, while sophomore Meryl Phair and Flynn each tallied.
Second half action momentum stayed in Mount Holyoke's corner to open the frame as the Lyons went on a 7-0 run to grab a 20-2 lead. Rookie Allie Brown scored to lead off the rush from Meotti, followed by three goals from Smith, along with two more from Torrez-Miner.
Emerson saw Julia Mallon score at 4:37 to close the gap to 20-3, but the fifth goal of the contest from Flynn closed out the scoring for the contest at 1:49.
MHC saw Balwin record a game-best five goals, while Rankin added four goals and three assists. Smith had four tallies with two helpers, while Torrez-Miner buried three goals. Flynn added two goals and an assist, while three others added a goal. In goal, Wysocki posted 17 saves.
For Emerson, Mallon, Mark and Mumford all scored. In goal, the Lions saw Elizabeth Fretz record four saves.
As a team, the Lyons posted a 30-23 edge in shots, including a 25-20 advantage in shots on goal. MHC went 10-15 on the free position, while winning 16 draw controls to Emerson's nine. The Lyons also had a 12-5 advantage in ground balls for the contest.
Both teams are in action on Saturday at 1pm as Mount Holyoke hosts Wellesley, while Emerson welcomes Smith for Senior Day.
