SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Springfield College used a 12-goal first half to lift the Pride past Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday evening. With the win, a 21-8 decision, Springfield moves to 8-6 and 4-2 in conference play. The Lyons are now 7-6 and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.
The Pride opened the game on a 5-0 run until the 18:55 mark as Lyons' first year Caroline Flynn scored on the free position to put MHC on the board. Despite the momentum, Springfield bounced back with another solid 5-0 run which included two more goals by Kate Sarnacki.
Flynn notched the Lyons second goal at 7:37, converting a pass from senior Deyscha Smith to close the gap to 10-2. The Pride rallied for two more goals to close out the half. Mount Holyoke came out firing in the second stanza as Flynn recorded back-to-back goals and cut the deficit to 12-4. But Springfield countered with nine unanswered goals to pull to a 21-8 advantage with 9:06 to play.
The Lyons rebounded over the final 8:08 as first year Abby Baldwin fired in a pass from Flynn. Junior captain Julianna Rankin scored at 4:04, followed by a tally from Smith at 2:08. First year Allie Brown closed out the game's scoring with 23 seconds left to give MHC eight goals.
For Springfield, Sarnacki led all players with seven goals. She added two ground balls also. Katie Martel chipped in with two goals, two assists, a ground ball and two caused turnovers, while Katie Campbell had two goals and four assists with six draw controls. Taylor Kane recorded a game-best eight draw controls for the Pride. In goal, Brenna Keefe earned the win with four saves.
Mount Holyoke was paced by Flynn who had four goals and an assist with four draw controls and a caused turnover. Smith had a goal and an assist, while Baldwin added a goal with three ground balls and three draw controls. In goal, junior Mia Wysocki recorded 12 saves.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Coast Guard for a 12pm conference match. Springfield is also on the road on Saturday, heading to Wellesley for a 12pm NEWMAC tilt.
