Golf Finishes 5th at MHC Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Action at the 2014 Mount Holyoke Invitational concluded on Sunday and the Lyons posted an excellent Second Round effort with a school record score of 315. Overall, MHC finished fifth in the field of 15 teams with a total score of 657, paced by senior captain Madi Mendiola, who placed sixth overall and first among all Liberty League players in the event with a combined 157.

Mendiola (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) finished tied for sixth with Ithaca's Kimberley Wong. After shooting an 80 on day one, Mendiola rebounded with a 77 for the Second Round. Sophomores June Conti (Amenia, N.Y./Miss Porter's School) and Allison Shilling (New Caanan, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) both finished 24th on the day with a combined 165. Conti posted an 81 on day two, while Shilling - who shot and 87 on day one - bettered her effort by nearly 10 strokes on day two, with a 78.

Rounding out the team efforts for MHC were sophomores Heeamin Lee (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brookline) and Amanda Lee (Windsor, Conn./Ethel Walker School), who both had fantastic turnaround efforts. Heeamin shot a 91 on day one and an astounding 79 on day two to finish 27th (170), while Amanda posted an 85 on day two after shooting a 92 on day one for 34th (177).

Individually, sophomore Kelly McElreath (Oakland, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) was 70th with a score of 197 (96-101). Junior Hannah Lozinski (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) was 75th with a 212 (108-104), while sophomore JiYoung Yim was 78th with a 217 (115-102). Junior  Katie Poulin (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley) finished 80th with a 221 (113-108), while sophomore Vladislova Paskova placed 81st with a 227 (117-110).

Amherst's Jamie Gracie won Medalist honors, finishing with an impressive combined score of 148 (76-72). Williams's Tracey Kim was second with a 152 (79-73), while teammate Shelby Shote rounded out the top three with a score of 153 (81-72).

As a team, Williams powered their way to victory, shooting a school record 301 in the second round for a two-day total of 623. Ithaca was second with a 635, posting a 309 in the second round, while Middlebury shot a total of 640 for third overall. New York University (650) and Mount Holyoke (657) rounded out the top five.

The Lyons return to action next weekend when they head north to compete in the Middlebury Invitational. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
