Golf Places 2nd at NYU Invitational

SUFFERN, N.Y. - It was another solid day for the Mount Holyoke College golf team, which posted a second place finish at the season-opening NYU Invitational on Sunday. The event, which was hosted at the Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, N.Y., saw the Lyons post a combined total of 639, including a day two total of 318. The host Violets posted the team victory with 620 points.

Leading the Lyons this weekend was senior captain Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo), who finished sixth overall with a combined score of 155. She shot a 78 on day one and posted a 77 during second round action. Sophomore Heeamin Lee (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brookline) was 12th with a score of 159 (79-80), while classmate June Conti (Amenia, N.Y./Miss Porter's School) finished tied for 15th with a combined mark of 161 (81-80).

Sophomore Amanda Lee (Windsor, Conn./Ethel Walker School) also finished in the top-20, placing 18th overall with a score of 164 (83-81). Rounding out the team competition was sophomore Allison Shilling (New Caanan, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall), who was 37th with a mark of 181 (88-93).

Also competing individually for the Lyons was sophomore Kelly McElreath (Oakland, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) and junior Katie Poulin (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley), who were 55th and 62nd, respectively with scores of 192 (96-96) and 224 (106-118).

Individually, Randolph-Macon College's Olivia Bowling finished first, posting a score of 142 (72-70). In team play, NYU won with a score of 620 (320-300), followed by Mount Holyoke with 639 (321-318), Middlebury with 641 (325-316), Randolph-Macon with 661 (333-328) and Amherst with 663 (331-332).

Mount Holyoke returns to the course next weekend when it hosts its annual MHC Invitational at The Orchards Golf Club. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
