Mendiola Named Liberty League co-Performer of the Week

TROY, N.Y. - The Liberty League has announced its weekly awards winners and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Madi Mendiola was named the co-Performer of the Week in golf. This is the 11th career weekly honor for the senior captain, who helped power the Lyons to a fifth-place finish at the Jack Leaman Invitational last Saturday.

A native of San Diego, Calif., Mendiola finished tied for seventh overall among 65 competing golfers at the Leaman Invitational. She posted a score of 80 on the afternoon, finishing just one shot out of fifth place and just three shots outside the top-three. Overall, the Lyons placed fifth in the event with a score of 332, just two shots out of fourth place and seven out of second place.

Mendiola, who is a two-time Liberty League Performer of the Week this season, owns a scoring average of 80.77 through the team's seven tournaments. Among her top finishes was at the season-opening NYU Invitational and the MHC Invitational, which saw her finish sixth overall in each with a combined 155 and 157, respectively.

One of the most decorated golfers in Mount Holyoke history, Mendiola posted a 2013-14 campaign which saw her record a school record scoring average of 79.88. A five-time Performer of the Week selection last season, she was also tabbed for ECAC Golfer of the Month honors last April. Additionally, Mendiola ranked 12th in the region and 42nd in Division III.

Mendiola helped lead the Lyons to its first-ever conference title, winning the 2014 Liberty League Championship by a 21-stroke margin. She posted a second-place finish - one stroke out of first - earning All-League First Team honors for the second straight season.

During her sophomore campaign, the Rancho Bernardo High School graduate posted a 78.99 scoring average, finishing eighth or better in six of eight meets. She helped lead the Lyons to a fifth-place finish at the Liberty League Championship, earning fifth overall for All-League First Team recognition.

As a first year, Mendiola played in eight tournaments, posting a scoring average of 81.27. She was eighth or better in five of eight meets and finished the season ranked 12th in the region.

Mount Holyoke now sets its sights toward this weekend as it looks to defend its Liberty League Championship title. The 2015 championships, which are hosted by William Smith College, will begin on Saturday at the Clifton Springs Country Club. Action will conclude on Sunday.

The winner of this year's championship will also earn the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament - which is in effect for the first time since the Lyons joined in 2012-13.
